Chapter 7 Gnana-Vignaya Yoga Verse 15
Shloka
Kaamaistaistairhritajnaanaah prapadyante’nyadevataah;
Tam tam niyamamaasthaaya prakrityaa niyataah swayaa.
Translation
Those whose wisdom has been rent away by this or that desire, go to other gods,
following this or that rite, led by their own nature.
Interpretation
In this sloka Lord Krishna talks about the people whose wisdom is taken away by the desires. This sloka makes us to realise that wisdom is not always permanent. Even wise people go out of the way or out of the track at times. According to Lord Krishna, such people whose wisdom has been affected by the desires go to other Gods and worship other Gods. They also will start following different rites hoping that their desires would be fulfilled and they are driven by the nature of their rites and the rituals associated with them.
Extending Interpretation to Mankind’s Life!
What does Lord Krishna means other Gods? Who are these other Gods, and if God is one then why there are these Gods and which God is considered to be real? The answer for that is, God is one and it is our upbringing and our nature that makes us to believe in a God. This is a slightly tough concept to understand and should be looked at from the point of view of a person. Suppose you were born in a Hindu family and you are a worshipper of Lord Rama. This is because you choose Him as your God. God is one, but you chose the God in the form of Lord Rama. You acquire knowledge and that knowledge starts making you wise.
Suddenly an incident happens and that changes your belief system. You start facing troubles in what you are doing and someone advises you to worship a different God or go to a swamii to escape from the problems. You do so, and in course of time, the problem is solved. You attribute it to the new God you are worshipping or the swamiji that you are following. Then your belief on Lord Rama shakes and the new God takes over. Inspite of all his wisdom he fails to understand that problems are like tests to our learnings and abandoning them and running away will only make people to go away from their belief systems.
Belief systems, whether it is God or the things that one is doing, are sacrosanct. They should not be shaken or taken away. If you go away from one belief system to another you will never be able to come back to your original belief system and in a way, you will lose your originality. That makes even a wise person an ordinary person and he will have to start his journey all over again. The point that we need to understand is Lord Krishna wants every wise man to have belief in one God and follow one action. Multiple beliefs and multiple actions will confuse you and makes you abandon yourself from the path of growth.
