Chapter 6 Dhyana Yoga Verse 7
Shloka
Samam kaayashirogreevam dhaarayannachalam sthirah; Samprekshya naasikaagram swam dishashchaanavalokayan;
Prashaantaatmaa vigatabheer brahmachaarivrate sthitah; Manah samyamya macchitto yukta aaseeta matparah.
Translation
Let him firmly hold his body, head and neck erect and perfectly still, gazing at the tip ofhis nose, without looking around.
Serene-minded, fearless, firm in the vow of a Brahmachari, having controlled the mind, thinking of Me and balanced in mind, let him sit, having Me as his supreme goal.
Interpretation
In this sloka Lord Krishna talks about the way a person who is meditating should sit. In the first part of the sloka Lord Krishna is talking about the way in which the person should sit physically. He says that the person who is doing meditation should sit straight, hold his body firm and his neck and back should be in perfect line. His eyes should look at the tip of his nose only and he should not look anywhere else. Second part talks about his mental state. Lord Krishna says that the person doing meditation should be having a clean mind, no sexual thoughts and should think only about the Lord and his goal should be to come to the feet of the Supreme Lord that is Lord Krishna Himself!
Extending Interpretation to Mankind’s Life!
The process of meditation involves having an equal and undivided control on one’s body and mind. First the person has to control his body. The most sensitive sense organ in the entire meditation process is one’s eyes. If a person is able to control them, then he will be able to keep every other part of the body under control. It is because if the eyes dont see anything then no other sense organ gets stimulated and that means the person will remain still. For that to happen the person while doing the meditation either needs to close his eyes or keep looking at the tip of his nose only. Looking at the tip of the nose is a very difficult thing to do, but the person has to master it.
Another things that the person doing meditation should have is the control of his mind. For the mind to be under control, it should be pure and it should not have any sexual thoughts. Sexual thoughts usually come because of unfulfilled desires and a yogi should fulfil all the desires before turning into a brahmachari again. A brahmachari is the person with no desires and only if a person gets rid of his desires he can be a brahmachari. Once he does that then he needs to shift his focus of attention towards the Lord. The entire purpose of meditation is to attain salvation and attaining salvation can happen only if he meditates God in his meditation. No other thought should come to his mind.
