Translation

Whenever there is a decline of righteousness, O Arjuna, and rise of unrighteousness, then I manifest Myself!
For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked, and for the establishment of righteousness, I am born in every age.

Interpretation

This is the most famous shloka of Bhagavadgita and I dont think so there is anyone who has not heard this. This Shloka tells us the need or the situation in which God takes a human form and takes birth on the earth. Lord Krishna shares that secret of his arrival on this planet with Arjuna. He says that whenever there is a decline in right behaviour and whenever wrong rules over the right, Lord Krishna says He will manifest himself or come to this World. He also says that for the protection of the good and punishing the evil and destroying the wicked people on this world and to establish the goodness back, Lord Vishnu will keep coming to this World again and again.

Extending Interpretation to Mankind’s Life!

The question that comes to everyone’s mind reading this shloka is “why does God Himself has to come this world to punish the wrong”? What has happened to all the good people that God has created? To understand this, one has to understand Maya. Maya or illusion is something that God himself created to test the human beings, as to how well they have learnt the lessons taught by God. Maya puts an individual in comfort gives him false pleasure and makes him to neglect Good and God. A person will start doing bad and unholy things when he comes under the influence of maya. Thus when many people are overtaken by maya, goodness in the world reduces and evil forces and bad things increases.

There are good people also in this world who are not influenced by maya. Whenever bad people fall into the trap of maya and does evil things, then it is the responsibility of good people to establish dharma and establish good rule. But when Good people don’t do it on time or show reluctance in doing it, then the number of people coming under maya increases and suddenly a situation gets created when evil completely takes over good. That time good people become powerless. That is when the Lord who himself created this universe has to come to the earth and defeat the evil. He alone can defeat the evil because He only created that maya which made these people evil. Once that evil is defeated then dharma again gets established in this world.
