Chapter 3 Sloka 16 Bhagavadgita

Chapter 3 Karma Yoga Verse 16

Sloka

Na me paarthaasti kartavyam trishu lokeshu kinchana;
Naanavaaptam avaaptavyam varta eva cha karmani.

Translation

There is nothing in the three worlds, O Arjuna, that should be done by Me,
nor is there anything unattained that should be attained; yet I engage Myself in action!

Interpretation

In this shloka for the first time Lord Krishna takes his own example to explain the importance of action to Arjuna. He tells Arjuna that there is practically nothing in the 3 worlds that Lord has to achieve. The three lokas he is refering to are Kamaloka, Rupaloka and Trailoka. He also says that there is nothing in these 3 worlds that he has not attained that needs to be attained. Underscoring the importance of Karma, Lord Krishna says that still after achieving everything, He still engages himself in actions. That important is doing actions, says Lord Krishna to Arjuna.

Extending Interpretation to Mankind’s Life!

The word that needs to be known here is “3 worlds”. What are these 3 worlds? who exists there? Three worlds are the Worlds where our bodies and souls exists. Vedas say that the Earth is at the lowest level of these 3 worlds. We all live there. That means every soul that has a body lives in this first world called Kamaloka. Kama means desires. Body represents desires and every soul that has a body lives in Kamaloka. After the soul leaves the body where it goes is important and needs to be known.

When you commit suicide or die in circumstances created by yourself, the soul gets punished and it cannot leave kamaloka and keeps moving in the planes of kamaloka. Souls that have egos in them even after leaving the body live in the 2nd world called Rupaloka. Rupaloka is for those souls which have a high degree of ego, and deep senses of anger, attachment and achievement. The 3rd loka is Trailoka is the world for souls that have left all the desires and attachments. This the world for the souls that are ready for nirvana or salvation. This is the right place for all the souls before they attain moksha.
