Chapter 2, Verse 6 – Samkhya Yoga
“Dehino’smin yathaa dehe kaumaaram yauvanam jaraa;
Tathaa dehaantara praaptir dheeras tatra na muhyati”.
“Just as in this body the embodied soul passes into childhood, youth and old age, so also does he pass into another body; the firm man does not grieve thereat”.
Continuing to talk about the grief and wise men, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna the following. Even today it has a highest place in our lives. Lord Krishna says that this body is that we possess today is like a cloth on our soul. Just as the new cloth gets older and finally becomes torn, the body also goes through childhood, youth, middle age, old age and finally exits out of the existing body and passes on to another body.
Extending interpretation to Mankind’s Life!
What is soul? What is a body? Are they same or separate? What is the relationship that exists between them. These are some of the questions that we usually ask and wonder about whenever we get philosophical. Lord Krishna here gives us a simple and straight forward answer. Soul is the light that is the guiding force and the base of our existence. Body is like a wrap. When you look at a person and wants to judge his personality, you need to look at his soul, not the body. That is why they call your life partner as your soul mate as you love that person beyond his physical appearances.
He emphasizes that body gets older as the time passes by but soul remains as it is. A beautiful soul remains beautiful at the age of 20 as well as at 60, where as the body looks attractive and youthful at 20 but old and ugly by 60!
This, Lord Krishna says is because body is like a cloth that we wear. Imagine, how many clothes you would have changed in your life time? It is because when we buy a cloth and wear it for the first time it looks new and attractive. As the time goes by it loses shine, color and finally gets torn. In the same way a person in his childhood and youth looks attractive but as he ages he loses his beauty, his vitality and appears ugly. Finally he dies and soul leaves his body and enters another body. This is the secret of life. Till tomorrow….
