Chapter 2 Verse 27 – Samkhya Yoga

Sloka

Yah sarvatraanabhisnehas tattat praapya shubhaashubham;
Naabhinandati na dweshti tasya prajnaa pratishthitaa.

Translation

He who is everywhere without attachment, on meeting with anything good or bad,
who neither rejoices nor hates, his wisdom is fixed.

Interpretation

Continuing his description of a man with steady wisdom, Lord Krishna tell more about the qualities of a wise man to Arjuna. He says that a wise man is never attached to what he does. A wise man neither attaches himself to good nor the bad things that happen around him or to him. He neither celebrates victory nor hates failure. Such a person is a person with a fixed wisdom.

Extending interpretation to mankind’s life!

What is the root of hate? It is failure. If you try something and fail in it, you hate that situation. If a person uses words that hurt you and makes you feel inferior, you hate that person. Hate comes from failure, deprivation and humiliation. What if opposite happens? You rejoice. If you succeed in a task in a big way, you rejoice. If people around you praise you then you will rejoice. Rejoice comes from appreciation and achievement just like hate comes from humiliation and deprivation. Both are the emotions which will take you away from wisdom.

Have you seen a person, you takes humiliation and appreciation in the same way? That person is a wise person. It is because, he never rises in praise nor falls down in humiliation. He maintains steady state. This steady state gives you a steady mind. That steady mind gives you a clarity of thought. That clarity of thought makes you to see the truth. That truth which gives you confidence, comfort and eternal bliss. You dont feel happy nor sad, you will be blissful. Happiness has sadness hidden in it and sadness has happiness hidden in it. But bliss is eternal and nothing is hidden in it. A person who is happy is scared that one day this happiness will end and sadness will set in. A person in sadness will hope that one day happiness will come and replace the sadness. Both are temporary and not steady so its not the vice of a wise man. But bliss is eternal and it can never end. That alone is the virtue of a person with fixed wisdom.
