Chapter 2 Sloka 11 – Samkhya Yoga

Avyaktaadeeni bhootaani vyaktamadhyaani bhaarata;
Avyakta nidhanaanyeva tatra kaa paridevanaa.

Translation

Beings are unmanifested in their beginning, manifested in their middle state,
O Arjuna, and unmanifested again in their end! What is there to grieve about?

Interpretation

In this sloka Lord Krishna talks about the composition of human body and the relationship of human body to the nature. The human body is a combination of the five elements. It is seen and understood by the physical eye only after the five elements have entered into such combination. After death the body disintegrates and all the five elements return to their source. The body cannot be perceived now. It can be perceived only in the middle state. He who understands the nature of the body and human relationships based upon it will not grieve.

Extending interpretation to Mankind’s Life!

Have you ever tried to understand the link between the air that you breathe from nature, the water that you drink from the nature? Whole Universe is made up of 5 elements. They are Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. These elements maintain balance. Nature struggles constantly to maintain balance. The same elements that you find in the nature you also find them in the human body. Let us understand what they are and how they are related.

Earth element in the body is the Bones and Muscles, Water element is the blood, Air element is the air that we breathe,  Fire element is the Heat that our body generates, and Space element is the Emptiness within our body. If any one element is taken out, body would collapse. There are various energies in the body like, Bio-energy, magnetic energy, electrical energy, mechanical energy, chemical energy. These energies run the body. These are called vital force or  Pran Shakti . Any imbalance in the five elements brings imbalance in the Pran Shakti or vital force.

Our eye can only see the middle state when the 5 elements of nature work on our body. It cannot see the formation of the body with these 5 elements nor it can see what happens to the body after the 5 elements leave them. So he advises Arjuna not to grieve for something that is only seen in the middle.
