Chapter 10 Vibhuti Vistara Yoga Verse 2
Shloka
Na me viduh suraganaah prabhavam na maharshayah;
Ahamaadirhi devaanaam maharsheenaam cha sarvashah.
Translation
Neither the hosts of the gods nor the great sages know My origin;
for, in every way I am the source of all the gods and the great sages.
Interpretation
After talking about the essence of Vibhuti Vistara Yoga in the previous shloka, Lord Krishna in this shloka talks about the Origin of Himself. He says that none of the gods or devas who live in the swarga loka or the rishis who are living in the higher lokas have any idea of the origin of the Lord. They are totally ignorant about it. He then goes on to say that the Lord Himself is the source of all the gods living in the swarga loka and the great sages like Bhirgu who live in the higher lokas. Everything emerged from Him.
Extending Interpretation to Mankind’s Life!
This shloka tends to differentiate the gods from the Supreme God. In Hindu cultural texts there are many gods and Supreme God. In Vaishnavism Vishnu is considered as the Supreme God and His avatars like Rama and Krishna are also considered as Gods. In shaivism Shiva is considered as the Supreme God along with Vishnu. Gods also include the sons of Shiva like Ganpati and Ayyapan and numerous other Goddesses. Then you have the vedic gods like Indra, Varuna, Vayu etc along with Prajapati Brahma. Then you have demi-gods and divine beings who live in Swarga. This is the hierarchy of gods and there are 33 gods as per the Upanishads and other vedic texts.
Lord Krishna says that apart from Trimuthis Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, Vishnu’s avataras, their wives and the children of Shiva who are considered as the manifestations of the supreme being, all the other gods living in swarga have no idea of the origin of the Supreme being. Example is gods like Indra, Vayu and Varuna. They are gods who are part of nature and they like human beings have no idea about the Supreme being. The same is the case with the great sages who live in the higher Worlds.
